Thorns Have Roses

Roses Amongst Thorns
Post Written By Eugene Morgan

Some people grumble that roses have thorns; I am grateful that thorns have roses ~Alphonse Karr

We have to first accept winter before we can see and experience spring. We have to first accept struggling before we can experience the satisfaction of completing a task. We have to first accept pain before we can heal. We have to first accept a loss before we regain something. We have to first accept the night before we can see the morning sun. We have to first accept hunger pains before we can  eat. We have to first accept learning before we can do something. We have to first accept death before we can live our lives to the fullest.

An Idea Changes Lives

“A mind when stretched by a new idea never regains its original dimensions.” Oliver Wendell Holmes

An idea is only powerful when it changes a person psyche.  A small idea can change the course of someone’s life. A new idea can disrupt and break down old ideas to created new associations in a person’s life. Ideas can help us get a new understanding that we haven’t seen before. Experiencing a new idea is a holistic experience because it will affect us not only mentally, but also physically and spiritually. We can see clearly, hear closely, and be mindful with what we feel internally.

Confidence Is Earned

Cadet Field Training: Class of 2013
 Post Written By Eugene Morgan

Confidence is based on evidence. Each time we make an accomplishment, we feel good about ourselves, thus we began to feel confidence. When it comes to doing something we haven’t done yet, we have no evidence in our past that we can do this, we experience the feeling of self-doubt. And yet, we can remind ourselves that we have been through the learning curve before. We won’t know until we try. We have to make several attempts before we can improve. This process is part of learning and this learning will reveal to us the evidence that we need to generate the feeling of confidence.

The Expression Of Laughter

“He who laughs at himself never runs out of things to laugh at.” ~Epictetus

This is the one expression we need to do more of, is to laugh, especially at ourselves. Life is short for us to always take things so seriously. It is all right to find humor in everything we do which includes the stupid things—instead of beating ourselves up.  This will lightened our load and help us to appreciate what life has to offer. We don’t have to always focus on trivial things and/or the mysteries of life. Life is a gift so we ought to live our life to the fullest with laughter.

The Mind Is Your Power

The power of the mind is your power. Use it. Don’t let it use you. ~Terri Guillemets

How come we don’t take advantage of the power we already have and use it? Some of us don’t realize how much power we have at our disposal. Some of us do know how much power we have, we’re just afraid to use it. If we don’t use our power, then others will take it from us and use it to their advantage.  We’re the captains of our lives. We have the power of the mind to steer us into the right direction of our life’s journey.

The Place Of Dream

A man is not old until regrets take the place of dreams.  ~John Barrymore

Dreams are about seeing ourselves rehearsing what we’re about to do in real-time.  We just got give ourselves permission to make it happen. Of course, making things happen will be life changing. Of course, making thing happen will feel uncomfortable. But we can be comfortable in an uncomfortable situation because our feelings are done by us. Dreams are a place where we can express ourselves without judgment or regrets. Dreaming helps us to reorient to our future.

“I’m Not Scared…”

‘I’m not scared of dying, but I’ve built such a beautiful life, and I’m not ready to leave it.’ ” Sherwin Nuland

It is nice to hear this above quote from Sherwin Nuland who wrote a book on the final chapters of life. The last words he uttered to his daughter before his death at the age of 83 is quite charming. He wasn’t ready to leave this world because he spent a lifetime building a “beautiful life”.  He seemed to have fewer regrets and loved and lived his life to the fullest.  He focused on what he did instead of what he didn’t do in his life.

Waiting For the Right Moment

WAITING

Post Written By Eugene Morgan

There is a time to wait and there is a time to move. It’s all right to wait for the right moment to take action, especially when we want our movements to be impactful. There is a time to wait for the right moment to speak and there is a time to do a lot of listening. Timing is just as important as spontaneity. There is a time and a place for both depending on situation and circumstances.  What we say is just as important as how we say it. When we were infants we began our learning, by learning how to recognize different adult facial expressions. We have learned the meanings behind the facial expressions just as we have learned how to understand the meaning behind vocal sounds.

Luck or Hard Work

Good Luck
Post Written By Eugene Morgan

The only thing that overcomes hard luck is hard work.  ~Harry Golden

We don’t have to wait for luck to come our way when we can start doing the work that’s required of us to success.  It is luck that we have the opportunity to work on something we have dreamt of doing. It is luck that we have a brain to think, plan and, then execute what we want to do. It is luck that we have limbs that help us move about when executing our plan.  It is luck that we can work on something daily if we wanted to. It is luck that we have the ability and resources to learn something we like doing.

Spring Is Before Us

spring

Written By Eugene Morgan

Today is the first week of March. Wow, how time flies. That means spring is around the corner. The winter months have been brutal. However, we are getting closer to warmer weather. This will be a nice transition. We will better appreciate the spring because it will be a positive change.  Although we will lose one hour when we set our clocks forward, the days are starting to get longer. The smell of spring is before us. The ants, the butterflies, spiders, etc will all be back as well as the flowers, new plants are all ready to reach the sun.

Make Good

Don’t make excuses – make good.  ~Elbert Hubbard

We all can make up any excuses to justify our inactions. We have been given the opportunity to make good in the lives of others and ourselves. When we do nothing, we lose out on the opportunities to make our own contributions to humanity and our environment. We’re born into a world of wonderment and curiosity. Children are always pushing the boundaries and limitations so that they can experience everything through their senses. As we get older we lose some of the wonderment,  curiosity and attitudes about learning. We can rekindle our curiosity when we begin to learn new things about life so we can make good in our lives.

Remembering The Past

Remembering The Past
Post Written By Eugene Morgan

To be wronged is nothing unless you continue to remember it.  ~Confucius

Sometimes we find ourselves remembering negative past events in our lives to only get ourselves upset again.  There is nothing we can do about what happened to us in our past but to learn from it and move on.  What we are today is from our past. In fact, our past experiences make us what we are today. If we’re going to look at our past, then we should remember the positive parts of our past as well. Both the positive and negative past events can be useful in how we live our lives today.

Conquering Ourselves

It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.  ~Edmund Hillary

Yes, it is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.  However, we can’t wait to conquer ourselves for us to climb the mountain. The mountain is used as a tool to help us conquer ourselves. We do need a new mindset or a change in our thinking before we can start climbing. It is better to prepare and do some research before we start.  Doing research will help us expand our knowledge on the subject, eliminate some of our preconceive ideas and have a better handle on things.

Feeling Motivated?

Do it, and then you will feel motivated to do it.  ~Zig Ziglar

We can’t wait on a certain feeling for us to do something. We just got to do it. Even while we’re doing something, we still shouldn’t wait to feel motivated to do more because we’re focused too much on what we feel instead of the task itself. If we focus only on the task itself, then everything will eventually fall in place.  The satisfaction we get is from the task itself.  We bring joy into our lives when we’re doing something for others and ourselves. Those things we do for others become meaningful and satisfying.

How To Do It

“I am always doing what I can’t do, in order that I may learn how to do it.” ~Pablo Picasso

There is usually a learning curve in something we don’t know yet how to do. It will take some time to find out how to do it. It will be a struggle but it will be rewarding in the end. Our struggle is only temporary because soon we will know how to do it.  It is a challenge to learn to do something we can’t do at the moment. It will take more than one attempt to learn how to do it. There will be some things we will learn right away while there will be other things require time to learn.

Within There Is Light

Light
Post Written By Eugene Morgan

“Nothing can dim the light which shines from within.”

― Maya Angelou

We have always had the light within us we just have to look inside. It is the source within us that makes us shine not external sources.  It is all right to rely on what’s within.  Although we see darkness when we close our eyes, there is also light beneath it. We just have to let go and allow our unconscious mind to show what’s there. Our unconscious mind will bring forth ideas that we haven’t thought about before.

Olympic Champions

What can we learn from Olympic champions? We can learn that it took them determination to become champions. They practiced their sport almost every day. They set goals for themselves. They did not give up when things weren’t working the way they wanted them to. They were willing to put their bodies through unforgiving challenges. They have learned how to be mentally prepared especially under high-level pressure.  They know their weaknesses but they build on their strengths. They don’t mind being pushed to work harder by their coaches. They are self-determined.  They believe in themselves.

Imagined Life

Imagination
Post Written By Eugene Morgan

“It’s time to start living the life you’ve imagined.”

– Henry James

When we start living the life we’ve imagined, we’re deliberately taking control of our lives. We’re not waiting for opportunities instead we’re looking for opportunities. There will be obstacles getting there but it will be well worth the struggle because we can look back and see what we have accomplished over time.  During our journey we will learn lessons along the way. However, we must be realistic on how we’ve imagined our life so we won’t be disappointed when we do get there.

The Process Of Change

Change - Its A New Year
Post Written By Eugene Morgan

If you don’t like your outcomes, change your responses. ~ Jack Canfield

What it all boils down to, is making changes. It is easier to complain than to make a change.  Disappointments will weigh on us if we don’t try. It is better to try and fail than to not try at all. Changing is about letting go of the old and taking on the new. We’re satisfied with ourselves when we know we’ve made an effort in making progress. Instead of looking back on the time we have wasted doing nothing, we can look back on the progress we’ve made.  We see that progress was time well spent in the long run because we built a solid foundation to help us to continue on the process of change.

Pleasantries and Unpleasantries of Life

Are you caught in between the patterns of life?

Post Written By Eugene Morgan

It is in our human nature to constantly find an easier way or short cut in dealing with the unpleasantries of life. We forget that up to now in our lives, we have gone through life difficulties. We have accumulated experiential learnings that we can tap into when we’re confronted with another one of life’s difficulties. Going through life’s difficulties is what makes us stronger. Sometimes fear can distort our realities from the assumptions we have made about the problem. The unpleasantries of life are all part of life and not the only part. It is all right to experience the pleasantries of life, however, pleasantries of life is not the only thing in life we experience.
