Be Our Teacher

“If we learn to open our hearts, anyone, including the people who drive us crazy, can be our teacher.”— Pema Chodron

We can learn from one another. A child can learn from a parent. And a parent can learn from child. We can learn from the sick and the dying.  If we’re willing to listen and observe things, then we can put those learnings into good use in our own personal life and be an example for others while others can be our teachers. We have teachers all around us to observe. Life is not only about living but also about learning to open our own hearts to let others in.

The Different Stages of Life

Monarch Life Cycle — 14 of 20

We all go through different stages of our lives. We also take on different roles in our lives. We are born. We are born either a male or a female. We learn about our bodies. We learn to lift or move our arms from left to right and from top to bottom. Everything is new to us. We want to put everything in our mouths.

As we get older more restrictions are placed on us so we can learn civility. The boys have to act a certain way while the girls have to a certain way. We enter public schools to learn more about social interactions. We’re learning to take part in groups.  And yet we’re learning to become more independent from our parent(s).

At 18, we think we know more than our parents. We’re learning a new sport at school. We’re at our first job. We’re learning how to drive for the first time. Some of us have the opportunity to go to college and being away from home for the first time.

We pursue our first careers. Many of us get married and having our first child for the first time. Fifty percent of us will experience our first divorce.

As we get older we experience our first health problem. We attend our first funeral of a loved one or a co-worker. Or we experience becoming an uncle or an aunt for the first time.

We begin to take more of a teaching role, as we get older. We may experience having our first grandchild. We begin to start reflecting on our lives for the first time and what we’ve done in our past.

We experience some regrets but we experience some joy as well. We start to slow down for the first time. We notice that things around us seem to be moving faster just as time is. But we still live because that’s what all we know to do.

Lessons are Everywhere

Life is full of lessons. We all experienced something the hard way. Some things are better experienced than told. Those of us who are parents want to tell our kids what they should and shouldn’t do.

Most parents naturally want to protect their kids. When we were kids there were things we preferred told about than experienced.  But most of time as kids we wanted to figure it out ourselves.

But lessons are everywhere; we don’t have to look for them. They’re in the movies we watch, on the news we hear and in the newspapers we read. Some lessons are warnings, others, for most of us, repeated themes in our lives, such as, patience.

Some of us, who are rushing to work, are impatient when we’re behind a slow-moving vehicle.  It’s not the fault of the slow-moving vehicle.  This started when there was a delay, or not getting us enough time to prepare for work.

Whenever we’re having a hard time with something, there is a lesson learned.

Read, Learn And Apply

Not only we ought to manage small projects but also we ought to manage one small project at a time because juggling multiple projects can easily overwhelm us.

It’s better to master one skill first than trying to learn multiple skills simultaneously. It’s easier for our brains to process learning one skill at one time.

When the skill is mastered, then we can learn to master another skill.  Some of us have the tendency to read and learn and read and learn again without ever applying it to something.

Instead, read the material, learn the material and then apply the material; that’s what makes things worthwhile mastering.

Teaching and Learning

{6}52: Reading.

What’s the difference between teaching us something and learning something? Teaching ourselves something means guiding and directing and making sure we’re on the right track of things.

Learning is our way of experiencing something.  How do we react or act in certain situation is a learning experience, something we learn about ourselves.  Teaching the self and learning about the self, are two different approaches.

However, learning and teaching can also work hand in hand.  Teaching guides the way we learn about things, while learning show us things that can teach us about ourselves.

On Being Teachable

Are we teachable? Are we willing to learn from others? Sometimes, we think we have all the answers, or we want to be always right.  When we think we’re always right, it leaves no room to learn.

After learning something new, it becomes significant to us. The thing we learn becomes meaningful to us.  We now can feel it with our heart and mind. In some ways, the new thing we learn becomes us, or it changes something inside us.  It becomes a gift to us and then we want to share this gift to others.  When we share this gift, we begin to re-experience the feeling as a new learning.
