We need to do a bit of thinking for ourselves. We have a storehouse of experiences and understandings that our unconscious mind can sort out for us. Nobody else can do our thinking for us. It is our job to do that for ourselves. Our experiences and understanding are unique to us in that we know what’s best for us. Thinking is about learning from our understandings and past experiences. The sort of questions we can ask ourselves are how can this understanding help me today or what can I learn from past experiences to help with this situation today?  This is about self-discovery.

Do Today What Matters Most

“Every morning we are born again. What we do today is what matters most.” ― Gautama Buddha

Today is really all we have; so we might as well use it. We can use our time today to do what’s important to us.  We get up hopefully rested to take on the day and hopefully retired from the day. Now is always the time to do what matters most. Today is our opportunity to shine and express our purpose in life. If we dislike our situation, then definitely today is a good day to start a new path. Lamenting about life difficulties will not change things, they will still be there waiting for us to make a move. When we rise up for another day, we are given another opportunity to pursue and celebrate today.

The Freedom In Action Breeds Happiness

“Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.” ― Dalai Lama XIV

We have control over what make us happy only if we act. We can’t wait on happiness to anoint us. We have to do something because happiness is an experience. Happiness is also a state. Happiness is something we do. If we want to change from one state into another  we must take action. The action we take is a choice we make. It is up to us to decide what action we want to pursue.  As we experience action, we’re also experience freedom. We experience our actions through the freedom of expression. The freedom of expression is our experience of happiness.

We Can Make A Difference

“If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.” ― Dalai Lama XIV

This quote from Dalai Lama refers to making a difference to change or to have an effect on the world. This can also be applied to making a difference in one’s life. We can effect change if we stand up and believe in the possibility and take the advantage of the opportunities when it presents itself.  We don’t have to just wait for something to happen; instead, we can proactively look for opportunities where others aren’t looking. We don’t have to be afraid to check things out because not every opportunity is going to be useful but we can find what opportunity will suit our situation.

Feeling Our Feelings

Post Written By Eugene Morgan

It is very important that we feel and express emotions.  Some of us have a habit of trying to think our feelings out. This won’t work. We can stop thinking of the unpleasant event that’s producing the unpleasant feelings. But for the emotions that’s still lingering, those can be expressed through writing a journal or sharing them with a listening ear.  Remember, emotions are not bad or good but they are the colors of our world.  And for us to feel the emotions of joy, happiness, contentment we have to feel the anger, sadness, guilt, shame, doubt and fears.  Without feeling the negative emotion, it is difficult to freely express the positive ones.

Self-Discovery

How can we learn something about ourselves if we don’t push ourselves? How can know our limits if we don’t push ourselves? We all have experienced going through difficulties in the past and still survived. We’re stronger than we think. It is through our past experiences we’re made to be stronger.  As long as we’re still alive, we will continue to have the opportunities to learn something about ourselves. Self-discovery helps us to gain some understandings about our interactions with others and ourselves. “Don’t give up your faults…because you’re going to need them to understand your spouse’s,” Milton Erickson.

Dare To Be You

Post Written By Eugene Morgan

We’re halfway there, if we dare to be ourselves. We don’t have to worry what others think of us. No one can take a way who we really are. So whatever wish we want to pursue, we ought to go for it just because of who we are.  When we pursue our desires, we’re growing into ourselves; we’re getting more comfortable with ourselves. No energy is wasted when we’re being ourselves. We’re not worried about what others think of us. We can’t make apologies of being unique individuals just as we can’t deny the uniqueness of others. We all can give our uniqueness to the world.

Memories In Pictures

A piece of summer

Post Written By Eugene Morgan

Pictures are moments in time and space. We don’t want to forget our special occasions that we want to cherish forever. So we captures these moments through pictures, sounds and smells. And when many years has gone by, we can revisit those moments by thumbing through our photo album and re-experience those precious moments which were our happiest times and some our saddest times. Memories are very powerful. Memories can affect us in many ways. A picture can trigger memory that we haven’t recall in a long time. Memories can induce different emotions that we haven’t felt in a long time.  Memories can be helpful and they can be hurtful. Some memories we would rather not recall while some we don’t want to forget.

Quiet Sounds

Sometimes we need to get away from noisy and loud sounds. Loud sounds can be over stimulating. It is good to have some silence so we can hear the sound of our breathing. We can hear our intimate thoughts. Quiet sounds can help us to focus inwardly and create a peace of mind and can quiet the mind.  We’re allowed to get back to our own rhythm and we can be centered again. A ticking of a clock can also be soothing to our ears while reading an interesting book.  Low sounds can quickly ease us to a nice sound sleep.

When We Think The Grass Is Greener

Green Grass
Post Written By Eugene Morgan

When we think the grass is greener on the other side, then it may means that we’re taking things in our life for granted.  A desire creates a need to have and want something. Once we fulfill that want or desire, our attention towards it ceases. When we no longer interested in it anymore then we move on to the next thing that grabs our attention. Even if we had the greenest grass in our neighborhood the novelty will eventually wear off.  But we can be grateful for what we already have in our lives. We can be grateful for our physical health when others are struggling with their health. We can be grateful for still having a job during the recession. We can be grateful to have water, when other parts of the world are without. If we think about it we can all find something grateful about our lives today.

We Have The Answers

XXI: Azathoth Pleroma

Post Written By Eugene Morgan

If we’re truly honest with ourselves and we ultimately know what’s best for ourselves, then we don’t necessarily need to get answers from another of what we want to do next in our lives. When we want a problem to be resolved, we don’t have to look outside ourselves, but we can look from within. We have the answers to most of our problems. Sometime we don’t want to know or face asking the kind of questions because of the fear of what they may reveal about ourselves. This is why self-acceptance is very important. The revelation of ourselves may be something we dislike. However, if we accept that part we dislike, then we’ll be free to be ourselves and, in turn,  be more accepting of other’s flaws.

Conquering Self

“If you do not conquer self, you will be conquered by self.” ~Napoleon Hill

Change creates resistance. We all know that change isn’t always fun. Change is difficult sometimes. It’s a lot easier to find excuses or distractions than to accept the fact that change is inevitable.  Conquering self can free us from our self. Our feelings are not a good excuse to do nothing when it is require of us to do something to make a change. We cannot rely on our feelings to get the job done. We have to rely on self-discipline, which means that we do things anyway in spite of our fears, our doubts and our uncertainties. It is through our behaviors can we generate the feeling of confidence and self-respect, which can lower of our trepidations.

Worrying Serves No Purpose

Worried and solitarian

Post Written By Eugene Morgan

“Worry pretends to be necessary but serves no useful purpose” ― Eckhart Tolle

Worry can distract us from focusing on the task. Worry keeps us alone in our world. Worry delays progress in our lives. Worry doesn’t support health. Worry is just a habit we just do. Worry is a time waster. Worry can preoccupy our minds with foolish thinking that has nothing to with the specific task. However, if we just do and deal with what’s worrying us then we will feel more in control of our lives and not be paralyzed with worrying.

We Change

“Things do not change; we change.” ~ Henry David Thoreau

When we feel like we can’t change unpleasant events in our lives, then it is time to make personal changes. In order words, we can change our perception of the unpleasant event. The unpleasant event can be something we can learn from or find something positive . When we change our perception, then we have some sort of control in ourselves regarding how we  respond or react to unpleasant events.  This is not to minimize how unpleasant the event may be but to have a way to focus our attention towards a new perception so that we can process easily the event.

Claim Your House

House

Post Written By Eugene Morgan

When we are owners of a house, we ought to claim it and not let the ghost of the previous owners take over. Claiming our house means taking care of it, cleaning it, maintaining it, repairing it, etc.  In the same way, as we claim ownership of a house, we ought to claim ownership of our lives. We don’t have to live our lives without a purpose or without a direction. Instead, we ought to take ownership of our lives because we’re responsible for taking care of ourselves. We don’t have to be told what we should do next in our lives. We don’t have to live our lives aimlessly but with a goal in mind, is what we can look forward to doing.

The Unwritten Future

Post Written By Eugene Morgan

“A man with outward courage dares to die; a man with inner courage dares to live.” ~ Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching

Our trepidations about death are really about our trepidations about life. We can be afraid about living the life we want. It takes courage to start on something new that we aren’t use to doing. The unknown creates fear. We don’t know how things are going to be in the future. The truth is that our future has not be written so whatever the decisions we make has the ability to mold our future. We have the power; we just got to believe. The decisions we’ve made in our past dictate what we’re doing today. If we want to make a change for something else, it is better to carefully consider our decisions today for an unwritten future.

Ericksonian Fable:The Roadrunner

Roadrunner on Rock

Post Written By Eugene Morgan

A roadrunner was not having luck in finding prey. When he saw a hawk from the sky that dove to scoop up a rodent, he thought to himself “If only I could fly like the hawk, then maybe I could have spotted that rodent.”

The old man heard him and stated, “Of course you can’t fly like a hawk; you have the smallest wings for a big bird as you.”

“But why settle for just rodents when a roadrunner is known to swallow a rattlesnake,” asked the old man.

“Don’t you know when you expand your wings; they’re shaped like a matador’s cape. When a matador uses his cape, he lures a bull in for a series of attacks. The rattlesnake will not care if you can fly, all it will be concern about is what are you going to do with those wings of yours.”

After several days without anything to eat, the roadrunner saw a rattlesnake swallowing a rodent.

“I can’t permit a hawk and now rattlesnake to eat all the rodents,” said the roadrunner.

So the roadrunner confronted the rattlesnake and started flapping his wings and before the rattlesnake started to rattle its tail, the roadrunner quickly snatched its tail with his beak and started whip lashing the rattlesnake’s head against the ground until it was dead.  Then the roadrunner slowly swallowed down the rattlesnake.

We’ve Got To Start Somewhere

Post Written By Eugene Morgan

If we just start working on something we have been delaying, we would be surprised how much pleasure and feeling of accomplishment we get from doing it. The reasons we delay doing something that is because we have these beliefs that it won’t be satisfying and we’re wasting of our time with foolish nonsense. Some days it won’t be satisfying and  a waste of our time as long as we’re learning something and that progress is continuing. Delaying doing something can be considered a waste of time. Time is valuable. Once time is lost we can never get it back.

Psychological Landmarks

Post Written By Eugene Morgan

“If you realize that all things change, there is nothing you will try to hold on to.” ~Zen Proverb

If change is inevitable, how come we create stress and anxiety from it? We like to hold on what’s familiar to us. Familiarity is unthreatening because we know where everything is, we have psychological landmarks everywhere. But if we take away some our psychological landmarks, then we will feel disconnected from our world that we created. Our landmarks were something to hold on to for us to get through our day. Landmarks are reminders that everything is normal and somewhat predictable. But if we just gradually accept and let go and say goodbye to some of our psychological landmarks, then we can rely more  on our inner self or our inner resources to help us to create new landmarks that are new and refreshing and more welcoming.

Now, Is The Time To Start

Journey - First Step

Post Written By Eugene Morgan

If we start now and not wait for tomorrow, then we will begin to learn and see progress in our work. It is in the journey that we learn something about ourselves and about what we’re learning. Thinking about how we start the work, isn’t enough, instead we have to be hands-on for the learning can set in our brain. Through our journey we will discover things we haven’t known before that may be useful towards our progress. So once we begin to discovery interesting things along the way, we will want to find out more. While we’re away from the work, we will begin to look forward in getting back to it.
